Mouth Sores or Stomatitis

Stomatitis is caused by a virus and can last 1-2 weeks.

Symptoms may include:

  • Blisters or ulcers on the gums, tongue, inside of the cheeks, or the soft palate
  • Drooling
  • Refusal to eat or drink
  • Fever

If your child has mouth ulcers, try the following:

  • Acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain
  • Encourage fluids
  • Avoid acidic drinks such as soft drinks, citrus drinks or tomato based drinks.  These may cause increased irritation.
  • Give your child soft foods and avoid salty foods.

Call or make an appointment online if:

  • You are concerned your child is dehydrated
  • Your child is not improving after 7 days
